CURRICULUM
Students are grouped on the basis of their language and Math abilities
and social and emotional maturity. Within these small groupings,
a holistic approach is taken to instructional design so that whatever is
taught contributes to the growth of the person as a whole. Success
is maximized by personalized instruction, computer assisted modules, and
a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. As of the 1986/87
school year, a model industrial workshop area has been incorporated within
the school as a further preparatory phase for those who cannot immediately
enter our work study programme. Students in these programmes are
provided with an “on-the-job” experience and are closely supervised by
the school personnel.

WORK STUDY PROGRAMME
The Work Study Programme emphasizes the acquisition of appropriate behavioral
skills required to succeed in the work place, namely initiative and decision-making
skills needed for the job, social and inter-personal communication skills,
responsible behaviour and efficient productivity skills. The learning
of these skills is considered as part of the ongoing process in the eventual
attainment of full-time work for our students. To this end, all employers
were informed that the purpose of our Work Study Programme was to produce
productive human beings capable of gaining and maintaining full-time employment.
This scope permitted employers to view our students as possible future
employees and their training and guidance was therefore accordingly structured.
The students participating in the Work Study Programme receive on-the-job
training four days a week and the fifth day is devoted to in-school follow
up and remediation by our Work Study Teacher. For more detailed information,

SERVICES
With its small student population it is possible for teachers and the
administration to know all the students and to work with them on an individual
basis. Regularly scheduled weekly multi-disciplinary meetings
are used to review student dossiers in the light of reports given by class
teachers, guidance counselor, school psychologist, outside agencies and
any other source of pertinent information. On the basis of these
recommendations, a student’s grouping and/or method and content of instruction
are altered. This close monitoring and flexibility regarding the
student’s needs within the already intimate environment of Paul VI has
allowed us to successfully re-integrate students into vocational programmes
offered by other secondary schools. At Paul VI there are not “lost
causes”, just greater challenges. Self-worth and human dignity are
our first and foremost consideration.

SUPPORT PERSONNEL
To help the students in all facets of development, Paul VI has, along
with the regular teaching staff, the support services of a guidance counselor,
2 child-care technicians, a social worker, a speech
pathologist, and a nurse.

STUDENT LIFE
Activities are designed to maximize the potential for peer groups and
social interaction: winter and summer games programmes, dances, sports,
seasonal liturgical activities, field trips, Christmas luncheon, and overnight
camping. Many students discover a new sense of self-worth when placed
in real-life situations commensurate with their abilities, needs and development
level.

PARENT PARTICIPATION
Parents are encouraged to actively participate in the life of the school.
Meetings are held at the end of each term and an on-going contact is maintained
according to individual needs. In-depth progress reports and course
outlines are sent home so that parents can monitor and assist the school
in reaching the specific objectives outlined.
