TOPIARY comes to Paul VI

What is Topiary?

It is the Art of training living trees and shrubs into artificial, decorative shapes. Topiary is known to have been practiced in the 1st cent. AD. The earliest topiary was probably the simple development of edgings, cones, columns, and spires to accent a garden scene. It gained popularity again in the Middle Ages in European gardens when trees and shrubs had to be grown in the tight surroundings of medieval cloister and castle gardens. This architectural use gave way to elaborate shapes such as ships, hunters, and hounds. The fashion reached its height in Britain in the late 17th and early 18th cent. but was displaced by the so-called natural garden.

Ms. Cheryl Dumont has helped students understand this concept through a special project - MURAL DECORATION. Students have the opportunity to plan, design and finally paint a final product on the walls in the school assembly hall.
